Frankly if you can afford white truffles (currently selling at about 2500 euros per kilo) you probably already have a substantial cellar to pick from but just so you don’t in any way detract from the pleasure of eating your investment let me tell you what the Piedmontese do.

Fabulous day at a the first Cheese and Cider summit @littlepomona bringing together cheesemakers and cider producers. There’s a natural synergy between the two which i don’t think we make enough of. Here are two of my favourite cheeses, @applebyscheese Cheshire and @sticheltondairy along with gorgeous ciders from @rosscider, @welshmountaincider and @olivers_cider and @cellarmansam’s brilliant Cheddar on my Mind which, as the name suggests, is made to go with cheddar. . . . #cheese #cheddar #cheesemaker #cheeselover #cider #hardcider #cheeseandciderRare chance to drink a 1990 @pauljabouletaine Hermitage La Chapelle (in magnum) with @thewinesociety1874 @noblerotsoho last night for which they apparently paid £25 back in the 90s. The current vintage is now about £175 assuming you can even get your hands on a bottle*. Still amazingly intense so thought it went better with the cheeseboard than with the main course of roast chicken with morels and vin jaune which was perfect with a @domainefornerot Saint-Aubin. * apparently wines like this can sell out in 2 MINUTES once a newsletter goes out. #redwine #northernrhone #hermitage #roastchicken #cheese #saintaubin #whiteburgundy #winedinner #finewine #foodandwine #winelover #guestThese were the wines I presented at Friday night’s ‘Battle of the Beverages’ at @afoodfestival thanks to the generosity of the sponsors who donated the bottles. The idea was that @petebrownbeer and @olivers_cider and I should each champion a drink with 3 different cheeses * I picked @whitecastle’s Siegerrebe, a deliciously crisp fruity Welsh white to go with Dorstone goat cheese * A gorgeously rich full-bodied Ribera del Duero from @pradoreybodegas from @ultracomida go with a mature Teifi (a gouda-style cheese from @cawscenarthcheese) * and a lush, lemony @chateauliot Sauternes via @bordeauxwinesuk to go with Perl Las, a creamy slightly salty blue also from Caws Cenarth. You can see the beers and ciders my opponents put forward in the subsequent shots. Who won? Tom came first with two wins out of 3, I came second though won the third round with the Sauternes and Pete, somewhat unfairly, came third although he fielded some great beers. Fact is cider is amazingly delicious with cheese as you’ll find if you sign up to my Substack and join my online ‘bring a bottle’ subscribers’ tasting this coming Thursday. Really reasonable prices + 20% of drinks for hospo too. Piedmontese peppers, rabbit with fennel and white beans, cold roast beef with horseradish, egg mayo, oysters … we practically ate our way through the entire menu. Win win for the restaurant and us lucky customers.
