Beer and food pairing is getting big in the states

Having written a book on beer and food matching and cooking with beer last year (An Appetite for Ale) it’s been heartening to see the growing interest in the subject, especially in the states.

Recently there was a two day event in Washington called Savor which was described as a ‘craft beer and food experience’. It was a complete sell out. I would love to have gone but have been able to catch up on the sessions on Craft Beer Radio (would you believe . . .)

There’s also a great-sounding new book out called ‘He said Beer. She said Wine’ by Sam Calagione owner of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and sommelier Marnie Old which I’ve ordered and hope to review shortly but in the meantime you can read about some of their pairings on the Food and Wine website

It would be great to see us doing something similar here - after all we have the beer heritage. But sometimes I think that gets in the way. There's a bit of a feeling that 'real' beer drinkers don't have any truck with that poncey food nonsense which contrasts with the unbridled enthusiasm with which young Americans are embracing the whole craft beer experience. Hopefully that will change.
