My best white, rose, sparkling and sherry buys from the current Waitrose wine deal
I’ve already posted my top reds from Waitrose’s current 25% off wine promotion this weekend - here is what I’d buy from their whites and rosés.
The offer runs until next Tuesday. You need to buy six bottles online but only three in store to get the discount. Note the promotion doesn’t apply in Scotland, not all branches will carry the wines I've mentioned and be careful to check the vintages which may not be the same as the ones I’ve most recently tasted.
I also didn’t taste as many whites at the recent tasting as I did reds - hence the smaller selection but here are the wines I posted this time last year.
Les Six Terroirs Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Touraine £9.99 down to £7.49
Crisp, fresh Loire sauvignon that will appeal if you like Sancerre. Bit toppy at its usual price of £9.99 but decent drinking on this promotion. Lovely with goats cheese
Baily and Baily Folio Riesling 2014 Clare Valley £8.39 down to £6.29
If you’re a fan of Clare Valley Riesling snap this up. A really bright zesty, limey wine that would be great with a south-east Asian noodle salad.
De Bortoli Daydream Chardonnay 2015 Yarra Valley £9.79 down to £7.34
Classy, delicously creamy Aussie chardonnay that punches well above its weight. Drink with poached or grilled salmon and new potatoes.
Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay 2015 Margaret River £12.99 down to £9.74
Even better than the De Bortoli chardonnay above. Could easily pass for a good white burgundy. Drink with mushroom risotto. Bargain for under a tenner
David Sadie Chenin Blanc 2014 Swartland £24.99 down to £18.74
Even the discounted price of this South African white may make you gulp but if you’re a chenin blanc fan, indulge. (Note though that Waitrose’s usual price is £2 more expensive than specialist retailer SA Wines online.) A really, glorious complex textured white on a par with the best the Loire has to offer. Drink with a creamy chicken pie.
Le Bijou de Sophie Valrosé Rosé 2015 £7.99 to £5.99
Bit of a twee name but an appealingly fresh dry cinsault/grenache/syrah-based rosé from the Cabrières district of the Languedoc. Good for a picnic (assuming we have a summer)
Thierry Delaunay Le Grand Ballon Rosé 2015 Touraine £8.49 down to £6.37
A delicate pale mainly gamay rosé in the Provence style but at a better price. Perfect with a salade niçoise
Bodegas Muga Rosado 2015 Rioja £9.99 down to £7.49
Spanish rosados tend to be bigger, beefier and more savoury than French ones so good for a barbecue. Or a paella.
San Leo Prosecco £20.99 down to £15.74 for a magnum
I’m not a massive fan of prosecco though I know the rest of the world is and here’s a chance to get a magnum of a decent one at a good price. Fun for a wedding or other summer celebration
Waitrose Cava £6.99 down to £5.24
Want some fizz for a summer party? This is unbeatable value. Good with fish and chips too.
Juve y Camps Seleccion Reserva Cava 2013 £11.49 down to £8.62
A really good vintage Cava with great depth of flavour. For under £10 - in theory - but mysteriously not appearing online. Snap it up if you see it
Jansz Premium Cuvée, Tasmania £16.99 down to £12.74
This has always been one of my favourite Australian sparklers but has gone up massively in price (I can remember comparatively recently when it was £12.99) Reckon the quality is up too though and this is a good chance to buy it at a sharp price.
Black Dog Hill Classic Cuvée 2011 Sussex £30 down to £22.50
A gorgeous rich toasty English fizz from the talented Dermot Sugrue. Wouldn’t buy it at the full price but seriously tempting on this deal. However ….
Waitrose Brut Special Reserve 2005 £24.99 down to £18.74 which I recommended in the Guardian today and will buy myself if I can get my hands on some (again it's not showing on the website). Just brilliant.
I’d also be tempted to dip into Waitrose’s sherry range which is particularly good value especially their own label range. Try the bone dry Solera Jerezana Fino del Puerto and Dry Oloroso sherries from the excellent Lustau (both £9.99 down to £7.49) and Bodegas Cayetano del Pino y Cia’s amazing Palo Cortado £11.49 down to £8,62 a half bottle which tastes of liquid salted caramel
