8 wines under £6 from Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s is running one of its regular 25% off promotions if you buy six bottles this week (until Sunday 4th) - a good opportunity to stock up on your August drinking.

Bear in mind though that the original prices are pitched to allow for promotions of this type so you wouldn't necessarily want to pay the full price for these wines but at 25% off they're a bargain.

Note too that some of the wines are available in a limited number of stores and are not on a multibuy deal in Scotland. Also make sure you're buying the most recent vintages. All these are 2012s and 2011s

Taste the Difference Languedoc White and Languedoc Red (Originally £8.99 but on a two for £12 promotion currently so £4.50 if you buy 6)

The Taste the Difference range is normally good value but these two wines from the Languedoc are exceptional at this price. The white (in 530 stores) is a lush white Rhone-ish blend of grenache, marsanne, vermentino and viognier that would work well with grilled or roast pork. The red (in 586 stores), a blend of grenache, syrah, carignan and mourvèdre, is a typically warm generous Languedoc red that would go with all kinds of grilled and roast meats. If you buy only two wines buy these.

Taste the Difference Albarino 2012 Normally £7.99, £5.99 if you buy 6 (322 stores)

Albarino, a super crisp white wine from Galicia in north west Spain, is so much in demand that it’s become quite pricey. It’s rare enough to find it at £7.99 let alone at the £5.99 it will cost you if you buy 6 bottles. Snap some up - and drink with simply prepared fish and shellfish.

Taste the Difference Greco di Tufo 2012 Normally £10.49, on offer at £7.86 but £5.90 if you buy 6 (395 stores)

Another elegant, crisp, seafood-friendly white from Campania in the south of Italy. Could handle a bit of spice - seafood pastas and dishes like squid with garlic and chilli

Winemaker’s Selection Languedoc rosé 2012 Normally £6.99 but £5.24 if you buy 6

There are a lot of off-dry tutti frutti rosés around but I must admit I prefer this more traditional. drier southern French style, especially with charcuterie and summer salads like salade niçoise. Good for a picnic.

Winemaker’s Selection Merlot 2012 Normally £5.99 but £4.49 if you buy 6 (355 stores)

Yet another good Languedoc buy in the cheaper ‘Winemaker’s Selection’ range. A light juicy red that would work well with pizza or to take on a picnic

Winemaker’s Selection Costières de Nimes 2011 Normally £6.99 or £5.24 if you buy 6 (390 stores)

And if you like Côtes du Rhône you’ll like this very similar grenache-syrah blend from the Costières de Nîmes region between the Languedoc and the Rhône. Gutsier than the Merlot - a good all-rounder with everything from spaghetti bolognese to more autumnal stews.

Taste the Difference Chilean Pinot Noir 2011 Normally £7.99 or £5.99 if you buy 6 (586 stores)

Chile has some of the best value pinot noir around, particularly if you like the softer, fruitier new world style. One for duck, seared salmon or tuna.

You may also find some of these wines available from a post back in November last year though the prices may well not be the same.
