10 of the best wines under £10 from Sainsbury’s current 25% off promotion
Sainsbury’s has one of its regular 25% off six bottles currently which conveniently runs over the bank holiday weekend through to next Friday May 30th.
The offer also applies to bottles that are on promotion but doesn’t apply in Scotland. They don’t all have to be the same wine.
Note that some wines are only available in a limited number of branches and check the vintage on the bottle. I’ve based my selection on my most recent tasting a couple of weeks back of the vintages I’ve mentioned below.
There are cheaper deals but the great thing about these promotions is that they give you an opportunity to try wines you might not normally buy so take advantage.
Taste the Difference Prosecco Conegliano £10 now £7.50 (until 10/6/2014) or £5.62 per bottle when you buy six
11% 605 stores
A great price for this IWC Gold medal winner - ideal for a summer party or even a wedding. It’s worth trying the new Winemaker’s Selection Prosecco too (normally £7, down to £5.25 if you buy six) which is pretty good too and a better regular price.
Taste the Difference Coolwater Bay Sauvignon Blanc £9.50 now £7 (until 10/6/14) or £5.25 per bottle when you buy six
12.5% 605 stores
I’m not a huge fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but I know I’m in a minority and for those of you who are this is a great buy. Drink with fresh seafood, salads or goats’ cheese
Xanadu Next of Kin Chardonnay 2011 £8.50 or £6.34 if you buy six
13% 277 stores
A fantastic price for a mature creamy Burgundian-style chardonnay from the Margaret River in Western Australia. The deliciously cassis-like Next of Kin Cabernet Sauvignon at the same price in 292 stores is brilliant too.
Taste the Difference Awatere Riesling 2013 £8.50 or £6.34 if you buy six
11.5% 167 stores, not yet online.
Pretty, floral off-dry riesling from New Zealand’s Awatere Valley made by Tamra Washington of Yealands Estate which specialises in aromatic whites. Ideal for Asian salads, fish and noodle dishes.
Taste the Difference Greco di Tufo £9 or £6.75 per bottle when you buy six
The wine label may be like a bad trat painting but don’t let that put you off. A gorgeous intense zesty white that would be lovely with strong-flavoured fish dishes like grilled swordfish with capers. IWC Gold medal winner. Buy it if you like Albarino.
Winemakers’ Selection Fairtrade Pinotage Rosé £6.50 or £4.87 if you buy 6
13.5% 355 stores, not yet online
A good strong dark dry(ish) rosé from the Swartland region of South Africa. Ideal for barbecues or mild to medium hot curries.
Taste the Difference Languedoc Red 2013 £8 down to £6
14% 604 stores
This big beefy blend of grenache, syrah, carignan and mourvèdre is a dead ringer for roasts or stews. Regularly part of this round-up as is the lush, full-bodied 2013 Taste the Difference Languedoc White, a full-bodied white to drink with similar dishes to chardonnay, especially grilled chicken and pork
Taste the Difference Fairtrade Morador Malbec 2013 £8 down to £6
14% 519 stores
It may sound like something out of Lord of the Rings but this blistering big Argie red is definitely one to try If you’re a Malbec fan. And good to see a Fairtrade wine made to this standard. One for burgers or steak.
Taste the Difference Priorat 2011 £11 down to £8.25
14.5% 589 stores, not apparently online
Priorat is a premium Spanish wine region producing dense fruity reds of the kind that need a large slab of steak or half an ox to set them off. Here’s a chance to try one at a very good price.
Taste the Difference Chateau Tanunda Basket Press Australian Red 2012 £12 down to £9
14% 292 stores
Absolutely belting Aussie Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot) from low-yielding vines from across the Barossa Valley. Highly enjoyable now but well worth laying down a few bottles for 4-5 years. A good match for anything meaty.
It might also be worth reading this post from a similar promotion last October. Though prices and vintages may have changed there should still be discounts on the wines I selected.
