10 wines under £10 to buy from the current Waitrose offer

10 wines under £10 to buy from the current Waitrose offer

Waitrose has got one of its 25% off 6 bottle deals - probably the last before Christmas. While it’s not somewhere you would automatically head for a bargain it does bring a substantial amount of their range down under £10 (though I’ve included one that’s just over)

Not every wine appears to be on their website - some are only on waitrosecellar.com and may only be available online. The otfer does not apply in branches in Scotland, Wales or Jersey, motorway service stations, Welcome Break or petrol stations. There is also a charge for click and collect if you spend under £100 and £5.95 on delivery if you spend under £150. It ends on Tuesday November 10th.

Chateau Capenendu La Cornelle Corbières 2018 £5.24 down from £6.99

Robust hearty Languedoc red - perfect for warming winter stews

Tierra Sagrada Tinto, La Mancha 2019 £5.24 down from £6.99

Good price for an organic red. Bright, juicy, smashable. Good all-rounder

De Bortoli 17 Trees shiraz 2019 £7.49 down from £9.99

If your taste runs more to new world reds try this appealing juicy Aussie shiraz. You could even chill it lightly.

Herbarium Grenache Domaine Jean-Marc Astrum 2019 £7.49 down from £9.99. Online only

Gloriously exuberant grenache from one half of Languedoc power couple (his wife is winemaker Katie Jones who has her own label). Again one for braises and stews. His Fitou is great too.

Cantina del Nebbiolo d’Alba 2018 £9.74 down from £12.99

Elegant, mellow, autumnal - what Barolo should be and seldom is - certainly not at this price. Ideal for game like partridge and pheasant

Plan del Bichi Vermentino 2019 £7.49 down from £9.99

I never quite understand why vermentino hasn’t taken off - it’s such a food-friendly white with far more character than pinot grigio. Antipasti, light fishy or vegetable-based pasta dishes and risottos

Kaapzicht Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2019 £10.49 down from £13.99

Chenin blanc is underrated but this South African white has a similar richness to a good white burgundy. Drink with scallops or a creamy fish pie.

Pere Ventura Cava down to £9.74 from £12.99

I recommended this the other day - definitely a cut above the average supermarket cava with a real touch of elegance. Lay a few in for Christmas.

Williams and Humbert Alegria Manzanilla down to £4.12 from £5.49 a half bottle

Honestly it’s tempting to make up your entire six bottles from Manzanilla - at just over £4 a half bottle it’s a RIDICULOUSLY good deal. As are many other sherries in the age though I’m gutted to find out that I’ve missed out on the quite brilliant On The QT Vintage Oloroso from Gonzalez Byass which is sadly out of stock. Worth checking next week though to see if they’ve got any more

Whites

Terre di Vita Organic Pinot Grigio 2018 £5.99 down from £7.99
Pinot grigio? Don’t groan. This is a really decent crisp white that will work with anything fishy or with a selection of antipasti

Fief Guerin Muscadet Sur Lie 2018 £6.37 down from £8.49
Muscadet has fallen out of fashion lately which is good news as it’s generally underpriced these days. Drink with oysters and other shellfish

Left Field Albarino 2018 £8.09 down from £10.79
If you like albarino try this Kiwi version from Gisborne on New Zealand’s North Island. It’s fruitier and lusher than the Spanish version - would be great with salmon and south-east Asian salads.

Reds

Cellier des Dauphins Réserve des Vignerons Merlot Grenache Vin de France £4.42 down from £5.89
Cheap’n’cheerful Rhône - ideal for cooking, mulling and general swigging

Albert Road Pinot Noir Western Cape 2017 £7.12 down from £9.49
A drinkable pinot under £10 is a rarity but this light, pretty example from Duncan Savage is just lovely. Drink it with duck.

Waitrose & Partners Mencia Bierzo 2017 £7.49 down from £9.99
Bright juicy Mencia is one of my favourite modern Spanish reds. Try it with roast or grilled pork.

Castillo de Olite Coleccion Navarra 2013 £7.49 down from £9.99
Tempranillo-based red, similar to a rioja but surprisingly vibrant for a six year old wine. Great everyday drinking.

Baron de Ley Club Privado Reserva Rioja 2015 £9.74 down from £12.99
A classic style which will hugely appeal to Rioja lovers. Perfect for roast lamb

Villa Maria Private Bin Merlot Hawkes Bay 2018 £8.99 down from £11.99
If you haven’t drunk merlot for a while give this appealingly ripe, fleshy, Kiwi example a go. Would be really good with turkey.

Fizz

Chiarli Vecchia Modena Pignoletto Spumante £7.49 down from £9.99
Good party fizz in the prosecco style but with a bit more oomph.

Best buys in Waitrose's autumn 2018 wine range

Best buys in Waitrose's autumn 2018 wine range

Waitrose is currently running one of its 25% off six bottles deals - a good opportunity to stock up for Christmas. I've listed some under £10 bargains from their most recent tasting but also some more expensive wines you mightn't normally buy but which are worth snapping up at this price. (Don't read too much into the picture above by the way - it's simply the wines of which I managed to get a relatively decent shot rather than the ones I rate most highly!)

REDS

Waitrose & Partners Reserve Claret 2016 £4.87 down from £6.49

A classic ‘lunchtime’ claret - smooth, mellow, very easy to drink (with something like a shepherds pie I suggest)

Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune 2015 £13.12 down from £17.49

Ethereal, pretty red burgundy from an excellent vintage. Drink with duck or partridge. A bargain at the reduced price.

Cave de Tain Les Hauts de Pavières Crozes Hermitage 2017 £9.59 down from £12.79 Youthful, bright, juicy, peppery syrah - ideal for a steak frites

Heredad del Rey Monastrell/Syrah Yecla 2017 £5.99 down from £7.99

Really lush exuberant modern Spanish red that would work well with hearty chorizo-based dishes

Good ripe juicy northern Italan red that would go with almost anything Italian and meaty from roast lamb to a lasagne

Escarpment The Edge Pinot Noir 2017 £11.24 down from £14.99

Another delicate sweet ripe-fruited pinot, this time from the Martinborough district of New Zealand. Good with Chinese or other Asian-style duck dishes.

Rustenberg John X Merriman, Stellenbosch 2016 £11.24 down from £14.99

A South African Bordeaux blend that consistently delivers - perfect for a Sunday roast

WHITES

Moncaro Verdicchio dei Castelli de Jesi Classico £4.49 down from £5.99

Really decent Italian white which would make perfect midweek drinking with a plate of pasta or a risotto

Radacini Sauvignon Blanc 2017 £4.49 down from £5.99

Simple fresh, lemony Italian-looking white from Moldova. Good party option.

Earth Vine & Sun Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2018 £5.24 down from £6.99

If you find straight sauvignon a bit sharp try this luscious South African version with a touch of semillon. Again good for parties.

Fief Guerin Muscadet Sur Lie Cötes de Grandlieu 2017 £6.37 down from £8.49

Crisp, clean, saline white - perfect for oysters and other shellfish

Calmel & Joseph Villa Blanche Terret Blanc Pays d’Oc 2017 £6.37 down from £8.49

Intriguingly rich, spicy Languedoc white that would go well with many veggie mains (it’s suitable for both vegans and vegetarians)

Paul Mas Reserve Languedoc Blanc 2017 £7.04 down from £9.39

Another rich, spicy Rhone-ish blend of grenache blanc, marsanne and vermentino which would be great with pork.

Domaine Vincent Carëme Vouvray Sec 2017 £13.49 down from £17.99

Really lovely smooth, gently honeyed Vouvray that would be delicious with chicken or guineafowl in a creamy sauce. Will age well too.

Tenuta Regaleali Tasca d'Almerita Cattarrato Sicily 2017 £11.24 down from £14.99 (Limited distribution)

Absolutely luscious Sicilian white that would make a perfect aperitif or drink with simply cooked fish.

15 wine bargains from Waitrose’s current 25% off deal

15 wine bargains from Waitrose’s current 25% off deal

Waitrose has one of their periodic 25% off discounts until next Tuesday on all wines over £5 - i.e. most of their range.

It’s a great opportunity to top up your stocks after the summer and buy wines you might not otherwise be able to afford.

Here are the ones that stand out for me.

Reds

Remy Febras Ventoux 2016 13.5% £5.99 down from £7.99

Easy drinking Côtes-du-Rhone-ish red - great for everyday drinking

Esprit de Trois Pierres 2016 Costières de Nîmes 13.5% £6.59 down from £8.79

Another good lesser-known Rhône appellation - a good, big generous gutsy red to drink with autumnal stews and casseroles

Santa Julia Malbec 2017 Valle de Uco 13% £7.04 down from £9.39

Not the biggest, boldest malbec out there but appealingly juicy and easy drinking. Perfect for late season barbecues

Vinalba Patagonia Malbec 2014 14.5% £10.49 down from £13.99

A classier, more elegant style of Malbec from a cooler region. Good Bordeaux substitute with a Sunday roast.

Cave de Saint-Desirat 2016 Saint-Joseph 13% £11.99 rather than £15.99

If you like the fresh peppery style of syrah from the Northern Rhône here’s a chance to snap it up at a good price. Ideal with the new season's game

Rosé

Le Rosé de Balthazar 2017 Pays d’Oc £5.24 down from £6.99

Need your rosé stocks topping up after the summer? You can’t do better than this baby pink Languedoc rosé made in the style of neighbouring Provence

Whites

Haut les Mains 2017 Pays d’Oc 13% £4.87 down from £6.49

Maybe the best bargain of the lot - a fragrant summery blend of viognier, chardonnay, vermentino, mauzac, muscat and roussanne - perfect for an Indian summer if we get one. In fact perfect for a (not too hot) Indian meal

Laurent Miquel Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier 2017 Pays d’Oc £6.99 down from £9.39

Always a winner - one of the best examples of sub-£10 viognier in the South of France. Drink with a korma

Maree d’Ione Organic Fiano 2017 12.5% £6.59 down from £8.79

Lush, rich southern Italian white that you’ll like if you’re a chardonnay fan. Would be great with grilled swordfish.

Fenaroli Pecorino 2017 Abbruzi and Molise 13% £7.49 down from £9.99

Clean, crisp delicious white - perfect for seafood including grilled squid

La Dilecta Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Touraine 13% £10.49 down from £13.99

A highly unusual Touraine sauvignon with a bit of bottle age and a lush tropical fruit character. A show-stopping aperitif wine

Kaapzicht Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2017 Stellenbosch £10.49 down from £13.99

Lush, creamy chenin blanc which could almost pass for a good white burgundy. Drink with a fish pie or sole fried in butter.

Chateau de Montfort 2017 Vouvray demi-sec 12% £8.99 down from £11.99

If you’re a fan of Vouvray you have to snap this up. Off-dry and honeyed with a lovely counterbalancing acidity. Again, an aperitif or partner for a creamy chicken dish.

Fizz

Obviously this discount is a great opportunity to buy your favourite champagne at a knock-down price (even Dom Perignon is reduced to £90 though I suspect there will only be a limited number of bottles at that price) but this I think is the best bargain.

Vilmart Grand Cellier Premier Cru Brut champagne 12.5% £27.74 down from £36.99

Spectacularly lush oak-aged champagne - perfect for a present or a big celebration.

Sherry

Waitrose Solera Jerezana Palo Cortado £8.47 down from £11.29

One of my own favourites from Waitrose's excellent own label sherry range but to be honest they're all good. Sherry fans, load up!

7 good wine buys from Waitrose

7 good wine buys from Waitrose

I was going to recommend an English sparkling wine this weekend (what else with THE wedding of the year?) but came across some other good deals at the Waitrose tasting this week I thought you might want to pick up as well

First of all, the fizz:

There’s 25% off the Leckford Estate Brut 2013 which brings it down to £19.99 - a decent price for English sparkling wine these days. It’s made from the classic champagne blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier but, intriguingly, comes from grapes grown on Waitrose's own farm in Hampshire and is made at Sussex sparkling wine specialists Ridgeview. I wouldn’t say it was quite as good as the Ridgeview wines - yet - but it’s a classy sip and perfect for watching the royal wedding (with a few smoked salmon sandwiches I suggest)

6 other good wine buys from the current Waitrose promotion (which runs until June 5th.

Reds

Chateau Pey La Tour 2015 14.5% on offer at £7.49 until 05/06

A lush, posh-looking claret from an excellent vintage. Well worth snapping up if you’re a Bordeaux fan

Remy Ferbras 2016 Ventoux 14% on offer at £5.99

Simple, gluggable Côte du Rhône-ish red from neighbouring Ventoux. Good midweek glugging or with a charcuterie plate.

Santa Julia Malbec 2017 Valle de Uco 13% on offer at £6.99

Another bright, breezy glugger - slightly lighter than your usual Argie malbec but gutsy enough to stand up to a barbecue. Wouldn’t pay the full price for it though (£9.39)

The Cubist Garnacha 2017 Catalayud 14.5% on offer at £7.99

Big rich lush porty red that you’ll like if you’re a fan of passito wines or off-dry Californian reds like Apothic (though it's not as sweet as that). Would be good with barbecued ribs. Handsome bottle too. Note website is still showing the 2016 which I can't vouch for not having tasted it recently.

Whites

Les Andides Chenin Blanc 2017, Saumur 12.5% on offer at £6.99

A crisp, fresh dry Loire chenin - think muscadet or picpoul rather than South African chenin blanc. Perfect for seafood like fresh crab or prawns. Note website is still showing the 2016 vintage.

Laurent Miquel Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier 2017 Pays d’Oc 13% on offer at £6.99

Classic rich apricotty fruit from one of the best viognier producers outside the Rhone. Try it with a korma

And - of course - gin!

There's also a gin promotion on at Waitrose with several top gins discounted from their usual prices. But take care to check the prices elsewhere. With £8 off Gin Mare is a good buy £31.50 and Daffy's at £29 but Silent Pool at £35 isn't much cheaper than other retailers are charging despite the claimed £4.50 saving. I'm also a big fan of the Audemer Pink Pepper Gin (on offer at £36) which is a bit cheaper than elsewhere.
