10 good wine buys from Lidl

Lidl has released its latest limited edition batch of wines including 2 at under £5 - if you can still find them on the shelves. Here are the 10 I think represent best value.

Chemin des Cigales Grignan Les Adhémar 2017 £4.99

Don’t be discouraged by the obscure name - though goodness knows why they changed it from the much easier to pronounce Côteaux du Tricastin - this is basically a Cotes du Rhône-ish red - ideal for hearty pub-style meals like bangers and mash and at £4.99 ridiculously good value.

Bellanova Rosso, Salento 2016 £4.99

Another warming red though with a slight touch of porty sweetness that would make it a good match for a pasta bake or with blue cheese like Gorgonzola

Luna de Finca La Anita 2017 Mendoza, Argentina 13% £7.99

Romantic looking Argentinian cabernet sauvignon that would make a good Valentine’s day red - with a steak, I suggest

Viajero Cabernet Sauvignon Limited edition 2014, Rapel Valley Chile £7.99

Another good cab, this time from Chile. Still vibrant despite the fact it’s nearly 5 years old. Again a red meat wine but it could handle a touch of spice in a chilli con carne for example

Artan Reserve GSM 2018, South Australia £7.99

Typically generous, gutsy Aussie red to drink with barbecued ribs or a burger

Grecanico Terre Siciliane 2017 £5.99

Lush but not blowsy Sicilian white that would make a great aperitif or drink with a south-east Asian-style salmon or other fish dish

Corte Alle Mura Vernaccia di San Gimignano £6.99

Another good Italian white, this time from Tuscany. Drier than the Grecanico, nutty, deceptively neutral in that way that Italian whites are before they burst into life with food. Ideal for a spread of antipasti and most pasta sauces, especially a vongole

Domaine du Grand Selve Roussanne Pays d’Oc 2017 £5.99

Not a great deal of Roussanne character but then you wouldn’t expect it at this price. But it’s a pleasant fresh white with a bit more character than the average chardonnay. Would be good with fishcakes or a fish or chicken pie.

Ernest Wein Pinot Blanc 2017 £6.99

Alsace wines aren’t especially fashionable but this a brilliant pinot blanc for the price. Smooth, creamy and great with chicken pie or an onion tart.

Winemaker’s Selection Pinot Gris 2017, Gisborne, New Zealand £5.79

There’s a touch of gewürztraminer in here which gives it an extra aromatic lift. Perfect for Chinese New Year this week or a plate of spicy noodles.

And the Pilleterri (vidal or riesling) icewine is in my local branch reduced to £7.99 from the pre-Christmas £13.99/14.99, which seems vg value.
