5 wines to buy from Lidl’s latest wine tour (August 2021)

5 wines to buy from Lidl’s latest wine tour (August 2021)

Lidl has just released its latest limited release ‘wine tour’ selection. As I’ve mentioned before these aren’t quite the bargains they once were - only one is under £7 - but they all represent decent value for money, especially if you’re a fan of French wine.

Ventoux Blanc 2020 13% £6.99

If you like a relatively full-bodied white but would like a change from chardonnay this peachy Rhône blend should hit the spot. Would be good with roast or grilled chicken or pork.

Domaine des Deux Vallons Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2019 12.5% £7.49

Absolutely classic muscadet. Dry, fresh and crisp with just a touch of nuttiness from the lees contact. Perfect for raw shellfish (such as oysters), simply grilled fish and - and this may surprise you - sushi

Val de Salis Viognier Reserve 2020 Pays d’Oc £7.99

I wouldn’t have gone so far as to claim, as Lidl does, this is ‘outstanding’ or award it 91 points but if you’re a viognier fan it’s a good buy. Here’s what I’d pair it with.

My favourite food pairings with viognier

The reds are, if anything, even better value

Les Aumôniers 2019 Séguret Côtes du Rhône Villages 14.5% £7.49

A classic generous rich spicy Côtes du Rhône red that will take you into the autumn. Think beefy pies and stews

Collin-Bourisset Morgon Beaujolais 2019 £7.99

I love Beaujolais, particularly Morgon and this is a beaut, just brimming with gorgeous cherry fruit. And you almost never find it this cheap. I’m thinking charcuterie or a big pork chop.

Weekend wine bargain: Yalumba Y series Viognier 2015

Weekend wine bargain: Yalumba Y series Viognier 2015

If you’re a viognier fan here’s a chance to buy Yalumba's excellent Y series viognier at a very good price

It’s on offer at Sainsbury’s at £7.50 instead of £10, Wine Rack and Bargain Booze at £7.99 or Majestic at an even cheaper £7.49 if you take advantage of their ‘mix six’ deal.

Make sure it’s the 2015 vintage rather than a 2014 or '13 though - they may have got a deal on older stock from the importer.

It’s a classic lush peachy viognier with quite a whack of alcohol (14.1%) but would be particularly delicious with any chicken dish with a creamy sauce or a korma (see other viognier pairings here)

Laurent Miquel Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier 2013, Pays d’Oc

Laurent Miquel Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier 2013, Pays d’Oc

I like the lushness of Viognier but often find cheaper ones a bit muted, however this one from Languedoc producer Laurent Miquel which is on offer currently at £6.70 in Waitrose and online* is the real deal.

Although unoaked and relatively low (for Viognier) in alcohol at 13% it’s really rich with the seductive peach and apricot fruit that makes Viognier so alluring. I’d drink it with roast chicken, dishes with creamy sauces or even a mild curry like a korma. (See other Viognier pairings here)

Other wines you might want to pick up in the Waitrose ‘European showcase’ promotion which lasts until May 20th are:

Les Nivières Saumur at £6.69 - a crunchy light Loire red to serve chilled. Great with seared tuna

Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde at £6.63 - light (11.5%) crisp white from Portugal. Refreshing summer drinking with salads and dips

Cune Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco at £7.86 - gorgeous lush rich white from the Rioja region. Good with rich Spanish-style fish dishes

Domaine Wachau Grüner Veltliner at £7.79 - a good example of Austria’s versatile white wine grape - try with Asian style salads and noodle dishes

Cave de Turckheim Gewurztraminer at £8.39 - exotically scented white to drink with curries, especially a duck curry

*Although the vintage being offered online is 2012. You’d be better off with the 2013 if you can find it in-store.
