Amidst all the gloomy predictions for 2009 can I offer a ray or two of light. Times may be tough but that shouldn’t deter the creative cook or winelover. I should know as in the other part of my working life I write about budget eating in my blog The Frugal Cook. And what I’ve found is that if you use just the slightest bit of imagination you can create a dish or a dining experience every bit as rewarding as those on which you’ve lavished a great deal more money.

The point about a good pairing is that the whole should be more than the sum of its parts so don’t feel abashed to offer inexpensive wines or other drinks to your guests. Presented by the glass rather than the bottle the net effect will be to show you as a clever, inspired host rather than a parsimonious one. For inspiration check out my new blog Credit Crunch Drinking.

Share the fun of exploring new food and wine combinations by organising tastings rather than sticking to the formula of the traditional dinner party. Decide on a theme such as cheese and wine or a curry evening and get everyone to bring a cheese or a dish and a bottle (wine, beer or other drinks) and see which works best.

If you’re working in a restaurant you’ll find a well chosen drink match adds value to the dining experience at very little extra cost, enhancing the diner’s sense of having received a special experience and good value for money.

This month (if all goes to schedule) will also see a revamp of the site with a stylish new look and new sections on beer, spirits and cocktails. There will also be more video content, an improved search facility and we'll finally be getting our regular newsletter off the ground.

So we look forward to having you with us and all the very best for 2009.
