The result of our most recent poll showed just 11% of you considered the appropriately named Saint-Amour a good wine to serve on Valentine’s night - even fewer than the 17% who went for the equally romantic-sounding Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, which faltered after a strong start.

Iconic Sauternes Chateau d’Yquem fared better at 22%, just under a quarter of you either reckoning that sweet wine was more seductive than red or that your Valentine would be impressed by such conspicuous expenditure. Would you drink it with foie gras or an unctuously creamy dessert, I wonder . . .

But to no-one’s surprise, top of the poll by a generous margin with 50% of the votes was the out and out favourite rosé champagne. Corny? Obvious? Not a bit of it. Who do you know who wouldn't feel pampered by a glass of pink fizz?
